French electric guitar brands in 2026

Is France an electric guitar country, on par with the United States, the United Kingdom, or Japan? Judging by the dynamism of the electric guitar market in France, and the number of brands and luthiers, most certainly!

French electric guitar brands, while less internationally renowned than some of their American or Japanese counterparts, boast a rich history and distinctive craftsmanship. Here, I will focus solely on brands that manufacture instruments, setting aside for the moment the increasingly numerous brands of amplifiers, effects pedals, and hardware. This article delves into current French electric guitar brands, their innovations, and why they deserve your attention.

You might be surprised not to see some familiar brands mentioned in this description, particularly LÂG and VIGIER. After relocating its production to China, LÂG ultimately abandoned electric guitars and is now focusing on acoustic and electro-acoustic guitars, which are not the subject of this article. As for VIGIER, the brand is simply ceasing production in a few months, and the only VIGIER guitars you'll find are those still in stock in stores and those available secondhand. So, no VIGIER in this article either, at least not in the category of brands still in operation!

History of electric guitars in France

The concept of a guitar brand based on the Anglo-Saxon model is relatively recent in France, even though the French history of guitar making is very rich. It is notably marked by the Jacobacci, founded in 1931 by Vincent Jacobacci. As early as the 1950s, one of the Jacobacci sons, Roger, began electrifying acoustic guitars. A few years later, in partnership with the Parisian store Major Conn, the workshop began manufacturing the first electric models. You can find more information about the history of Jacobacci on their Wikipedia page.

It wasn't until the early 1980s that the first major French electric guitar brand emerged: Vigier. Under the leadership of its founder, Patrice Vigier, the brand offered innovative models, both in terms of design and features. With far less renown and a much shorter lifespan, the electric guitar brand Stall, based in Caen, quickly rose to prominence. They offered very well-made guitars in a distinctly 1980s style, notably Superstrat models inspired by Charvel. You can occasionally find them secondhand at reasonable prices; if you see one, grab it!

French electric guitar brands that have disappeared

Vigier

Vigier was long a pillar of French lutherie, known for its innovations and the quality of its instruments. Unfortunately, this iconic brand recently ceased operations.

Lâg

Lâg was a leading brand in the world of electric guitars, renowned for its elegant designs and high-quality instruments. However, it has ceased production of electric guitars.

Stall

Stall was a Normandy-based brand from the 1980s, known for its robust and well-designed guitars. Although no longer active, it remains a nostalgic reference for many French musicians.

Tips for buying a French electric guitar

When buying a French electric guitar, it's important to consider the quality of the materials, the luthier's reputation, and the instrument's technical specifications. Buying directly from luthiers or authorized dealers often guarantees better quality and reliable after-sales service. Forget the big, established brands (Fender, Gibson, etc.) that now focus solely on marketing and endlessly recycle innovations and designs from the 1950s.

Conclusion

French electric guitars represent a high-quality choice for musicians seeking to combine tradition and innovation. Brands like Jiyu, Ligérie, Berg, Wild Custom, and Custom77 offer unique instruments, crafted with premium materials and meticulous attention to detail. Choosing a French electric guitar means choosing excellence and craftsmanship
