I am taking advantage of the release of new finishes for pickups in Soapbar P90 format to talk to you about this format and the pickups that can be put in this format.
It all comes down to space within the pickup. The Soapbar P90 is narrower than a standard humbucker: 35mm for a soapbar P90 versus 38mm for a covered humbucker. Adding the 2mm of plastic occupied by the standard Soapbar cover, you're left with a maximum of 33mm for two coils. This means each coil is a maximum of 12.5mm, whereas in a humbucker, each coil is between 17 and 17.5mm.
Therefore, not all humbucker models can be fitted into the soapbar format, which is why I don't offer all my models in this format. Physics dictates that if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.
However, it's perfectly possible to fit many models, at least some of mine, into this format. This ranges from vintage, low-gain humbuckers like the Delta Roots, to the Future Rage, a modern humbucker with a high output level that allows for very aggressive metal.
I will be offering a new high-gain model specifically for this format in the coming months 🙂
Until now, I offered these pickups with a black plastic cover featuring two rows of holes. I now offer a much classier finish with open metal covers, nickel-plated or gold-plated, with a black ABS top that will beautifully highlight the pickups 's screws. These covers are more expensive to purchase and require a little more work on my part, which is why they are more expensive.
To date, I haven't seen this type of finish anywhere else on the web, but feel free to prove me wrong 😉
