Legendary guitar pickups : The Gibson PAF humbucker

If there's one iconic guitar pickup par excellence, perhaps the most iconic in the history of the electric guitar, it's the Gibson PAF. This pickup was a true technological breakthrough when it was released. Thanks to its clever design, it eliminated the "hum," that infamous 60-cycle hum generated by single-coil pickups.

Launch of the 1st Cecca metal pickup: Blade Runner – DoomFred signature

Making a new guitar pickup is always an exciting experience. You try things out, you experiment, sometimes starting with a vague idea, a simple desire to use a particular component, and other times you begin with a very specific idea in mind. When DoomFred told me about a pickup he liked, he immediately mentioned a dual-blade humbucker, with two rails instead of the traditional screws and pole pieces. During our discussions about legendary pickups , the Dimarzio Super Distortion came up, the first high-gain pickup with a ceramic magnet in the history of electric guitar, back in 1972: the beginning of the modern era. We also talked about Black Sabbath, Jimmy Page, and Dave Murray. So, the challenge was on.

Modifying a Bareknuckle Warpig microphone

Today's task is to remove the worn cover from a Bareknuckle Warpig humbucker and replace the cable. The old cable is only 10cm long, so I'm going to replace it with a 4-conductor cable, which is better suited to this type of very powerful pickup. Coil-splitting the coil will bring back a bit of warmth to this otherwise aggressive pickup.

How to choose an electric guitar pickup?

Here's a question every guitarist asks themselves sooner or later in their musical career: "Which pickup should I choose for my guitar?" The reasons for this desire for change are numerous and varied: a change in sound, switching to humbuckers, installing good pickups on a kit guitar, the need to upgrade an entry-level guitar…

Making an electric guitar (#1)

For this first project, made between [dates missing], I started with a Stratocaster as a base for the body and neck shape. However, the similarity with this iconic Fender model ends there. I've always dreamed of a guitar with a "wraparound" bridge, like the ones found on Gibson Les Paul Junior and Special models, and I'm a fan of the same brand's P90 pickups . So, it was on this basis that I set about building my first guitar from November 2019 to January 2020.
